My friend and I took a day trip to the towns of Zunil, Almolonga, San Andres Xecul, and San Francisco El Alto yesterday. It was interesting to visit these places in person because I've worked with textiles made in the first three of them. I enjoyed seeing the
huipiles - that previously I'd only seen in shops - actually being worn by the women who live there. The
tzutes, or utility cloths worn on the head or in baskets, were very common in the
mercados, where women needed to keep the sun off their faces or carry produce in baskets on their heads.
